General Description
• Cefoxitin sodium salt is resistant to β-lactamase
• It binds and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall thus interfering with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity
Applications
• Cefoxitin sodium salt is the sodium salt form of cefoxitin derived from cephamycin C
• It is a β-lactam, second-generation cephalosporin compound with bactericidal activity against numerous species such as Bacteroides, gram-negative bacteria, including strains of P. mirabilis, P. vulgaris, E. coli, S. typhimurium, and S. enteritidis
• Cefoxitin increases survival in mice infected with S. aureus, S. pyogenes, and K. pneumoniae
