It plays an important role in photoengraving and photography as an etching agent. It is useful as a mordant in dyeing and printing textiles. It is useful in the detection of phenols and phenolic derivatives; gamma-hydroxybutyric acids and also in the Trinder spot test for detecting salicylic acids.

NotesHygroscopic. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, sodium and sodium oxides and potassium.
