Description: Virginiamycin M1 is a macrolide antibiotic which interacts with the bacterial 50S ribosome, inhibiting its function in a reversible manner. Activity of Virginiamycin M1 at the ribosome blocks translation and produces a bacteriostatic effect. With addition of Virginiamycin S1 the two antibiotics produce a synergistic bacteriocidal effect.
Solubility ( literature ): Virginiamycin M1 is soluble in ethanol (3-4%) , methanol (3-4%), DMSO, Dichloromethane, DMF, and sparingly, in water.
